Louis-Charles-Joseph Rey (1737–1811) was a French cellist and composer born in Lauzerte, Tarn-et-Garonne, north of Toulouse in the Occitania region of France. Aged 16 he joined the theatre orchestra in Montpellier as a cellist. After studying with Berteau, he worked in Bordeaux, Versailles, and the Paris Opéra. Rey composed two sets of sonatas: his op. 1 is for cello or violin (with figured bass), and his op. 4 is for cello, with no suggestion of the violin as an alternative, and unfigured bass. These sonatas are technically quite sophisticated, with bariolage, high positions, and extensive use of arpeggios.
