Jean Balthasar Triklir (1750-1813) was a well-known cellist who spent most of his career in the prestigious Dresden court orchestra. He wrote six sonatas, which were published in Paris, London, Berlin, and Amsterdam; he also wrote seven concertos and three string trios. His surname is spelt in six different ways in various sources! Sonatas 1-4 were described at the time as being at amateur level, and numbers 5 and 6 as more advanced. They are for two cellos (the second part, 'basso' is unfigured). They all involve thumb position, passagework, and some sudden shifts to high positions.
