Francois Martin's Six Sonates of 1746 is a strikingly mixed collection. Nos. 1 and 3 are equal-voice duos for two cellos (without figured bass), while nos. 2, 4, and 5 are more obviously solo pieces (with figured bass), although even here the continuo cello sometimes plays in duet with the solo part while a second bass instrument takes the continuo role - and the sixth sonata is for violin and cello (without figured bass). The latter is one of the earliest examples of a violin & cello duo. Some figurations are similar to the writing of Michel Corrette, whose cello method appeared a few years earlier in 1741. This collection offers a wider range of technical difficulty than many other sets of cello sonatas; nos 1 and 3 are particularly approachable.
